BALTIMORE [3o1]
---------------
In a plea agreement with the [US] Government, a computer hacker has admitted
trying to help other hackers steal passwords guarding the computer systems of
large corporations.
The 32-year-old defendant, Leonard Rose of Middletown, Md., pleaded guilty
in Federal District Court here on Friday to two counts of wire fraud involving
his theft of source codes from the American Telephone and Telegraph company,
data that he then passed on to to other hackers. The thefts enabled the
recipients to gain access to the AT&T systems with the knowledge of the
systems' rightful operators.
Mr. Rose was charged in a five-count indictment in May 1990 after an inves-
tigation by the Secret Service and the United States attourneys in Baltimore
and Chicago. He is expected to be sentenced in May. Federal prosecutors said
they would ask for two concurrent one-year terms.
