MILITIA GETTING NATIONAL EXPOSURE

by Neil Stilwell, Staff Writer

Petoskey News-Review, Petoskey, Michigan 49770

November 18, 1984

Norm Olson's warnings of a citizenry armed against its tyranical

government has reached the ears of the national media.

Not long ago, the New York Times wrote about Olson and his growing

Michigan Militia Corps. The Militia's spokesman, Ken Adams of Harbor

Springs, said crews for "NBC Dateline," "Newsweek" and Swedish

television are expected to observe training exercises this weekend at

private property on North Ayr Road.

Militia members also said they'll be in New York City for a taping

of the Phil Donahue show next week. Representatives from the news

outlets and Donahue could not confirm their pending stories on the

militia.

The militia has been active on the press release beat and letters

to Governor John Engler lately, in something its calling "Operation

Legitimate."

"The press is begging for more, and we have much more in store for

them," writes Olson as the militia's brigadier general.

Olson has asked Engler to turn Camp Grayling over to him and the

militia. The 1913 state law written to accept the donated land states

it will be used as a permanent encampment and maneuvering ground for

the militia of the state, as a game and forest reserve, or as a camp

for recreational or health purposes.

According to Olson, the property cannot be used to house U.S. Army

or United Nations troops, or other foreign militaries.	He directs the

state to expel all foreign soldiers and equipment, give the National

Guard back to the exclusive control of the people of Michigan, and/or

convey Camp Grayling back to the donors, or "to the true defenders of

liberty in Michigan, which is the Michigan Militia, made up of

citizens still loyal to Michigan's citizens alone."

Olson has also invited country sheriffs and their deputies and

staffs to train with the militia, as the sheriffs are the only elected

law enforcement officers in the state.

"On the other hand, the state police, who often violate civil and

Constitutional rights and who are training black-hooded S.W.A.T.

teams, never have to answer to the people directly, but rather hide

behind the skirt of their civil service status," Olson wrote to

governor Engler.

Olson congratulated Engler on his election, and asked him to meet

in a summit on the state's safety and sovereignty.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises,

I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body,

it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games

played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for

the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore

be the constant companion of your walks." --- Thomas Jefferson
