That does no good. I'm just going to give some ideas for articles: "Getting Technical" - *.ftc - section This doesn't have to be all about Fidonet technical stuff. It would be nice if it related to Fidonet, and most technical things about computers will have some relation to Fidonet somewhere. Some ideas might be: 1. Tips and tricks of operating systems such as Linux, OS/2, Windows, and even Dos. Many tips and tricks can be useful to Fidonet Sysops and even users. Even if it is just a "tweak" to the operating system that makes it more stable, faster or ???. "Interviews" - *.inv - section Do you know a software author that writes programs for Fidonet? How about someone that has made a difference in the computer fields that relates to Fidonet? Ask them for an interview and write it up as an article. "Fidonet Software Reviews" - *.rev - section Do you have a favorite Fidonet software program that you use? Maybe your BBS package, mailer, tosser or some utility? Write a review of it and tell us about it. What makes it great, how you use it, the pros and cons... ect. "Fidonet Web Page Reviews" - *.web - section Review a web page that is fidonet related... maybe your favorite one or one that you found that you feel is good. Tell us about it. Give the URL and some information on what it has in it such. "General Articles" - *art - section Got a topic to talk about? Write it up and submit it as an article. Give the subject and your views on it. Leave the flame throwers at the door. These are just ideas for things. It's up to you to do. I can't write all of the Fidonews by myself. :) Regards, FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 3 15 Oct 2001 Frank ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 4 15 Oct 2001 ================================================================= LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ================================================================= I received this from the "editor@fidonews.org" e-mail address. I thought it only right that it be included in the Fidonews. As many will remember, Doug Myers was a former Fidonews Editor that passed away while still editor. He was respected and liked by all. Regards, Frank Begin message --- Doug From Jerry Bottiger Thu, 11 Oct 2001 I just recently learned of your web site through my brother ,Ross. I am the sister of Doug Myers who once edited fidonet. I always appreciated Dougs humor and his creativity ,but had no idea he was loved by so many people.. I too loved him dearly ,and cried when I read your beautiful tributes to him ,as well as his poem. He touched everyone right in the heart. Thank you all for being such an important part of his life. In his last days ,I spent alot of time with him, being a nurse ,I felt i could help. He taught me ,that just being his sister helped even more!! He loved people, and fidonet was a way to communicate and share himself with you all . God bless and keep you all well,, sincerely, shannon, dougs sister ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 5 15 Oct 2001 ================================================================= FIDONET NOTICES ================================================================= New Email address for Editor coming By Frank Vest On Oct. 15, 2001, I am having DSL installed in my home. Sadly, this will require my leaving the ISP that I have had for the last few years. I'm not sure what my new E-Mail address will be. I do know that the old one will continue to function until I get the new one established and promoted. As soon as I get the new E-mail address, I will post it in the Fidonews Echo and will put another notice, along with the changes to the Fidonews Banner and other portions of the Fidonews, giving my new address. Regards, Frank Vest - Editor, Fidonews ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 6 15 Oct 2001 ================================================================= EDITOR'S CORNER ================================================================= Leaving a good ISP By Frank Vest flv@texoma.net In this world of high speed communication, instant messaging and other technological advances and competition, it isn't often that one feels the need, desire or finds something that deserves praise. Most things Internet and business wise are "just another business" that is competing for _your_ business. I believe it was some three or four years ago that I found myself in a position of needing an Internet Service Provider. My children were both in school and it seemed that every day a teacher was telling them to "look it up on the Internet". The wife and I decided that we were going to have to get Internet access. Being new to this "Internet thing", we started checking for price and services offered. Not knowing what to look for or what questions to ask, we called "Internet Texoma" just because it happened to "catch our eye". They were helpful, not pushy, and told us what they had to offer. We signed up. Since that time, we have had excellent service from Internet Texoma. I could "bubble on" about the service, but suffice it to say that they have been there with tech support and other help whenever needed. My son had a cable modem installed in the house and I connected to it via the LAN for faster browsing.... I couldn't get the e-mail to work through the cable modem to Internet Texoma and called their tech support. That could have been considered as a "slap in the face", but Internet Texoma explained how to get my E-mail to work through the cable modem to and from them. Now the time has come to leave Internet Texoma. Maybe this isn't a place to submit an article such as this and Internet Texoma may never see this. That's ok. I still want to say, "It's been good." and "I hate to leave you." My only reason for leaving Internet Texoma is that I can get a really good deal on DSL from my wife's work. I just can't pass it up. If anyone moves to the "North Texas" area and is looking for an ISP, check out http://www.texoma.net Thanks, Internet Texoma, for the years of service. Regards, Frank Vest ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 7 15 Oct 2001 ================================================================= HUMOR IN A FIDO VEIN ================================================================= I found this on the Internet in a couple of URLs. I'm not sure who wrote it and, apparently, neither is anyone else. - Frank Vest Theory on the Origin of the Internet Assumed to be written by Bob Moroney I have a theory on the origin of the Internet. Our canine companions have had a similar network in place for millennia. Think about it -- the dog over the back barks, yours barks, the one down the road barks and so on. They have a very sophisticated communications protocol (K9 I think). This consists of the familiar seven bite packet that we hear every night (they do it at night because there's more available bandwidth in the audio spectrum -- fewer trucks, cars, machinery etc.) you know -- woof woof, woof woof woof woof, woof. The first two bites are the address i.e.: aunty.FiFi@the_big_Gum_Tree/with/persian The next four bites are message data "Hey Auntie where's the bone you promised me for Christmas you bitch?" The last bite is the CRC "Canine Rabies Check". It's usually omitted by Australian dogs because we don't have rabies but some yappies use it to transmit stock exchange information. Now don't dismiss this proposition too lightly. I know some of you will say you can't get that much info into seven bites, but there's a big difference between a bite and a byte. A byte, as we all know is only eight bits. But to a dog a bite is something completely different. One bite, "WOOF", is around .125 seconds in length and is a modulated analog signal with a better bandwidth than the telephone network. Remember that dogs have an auditory range which we regard as supersonic. You may also say that reliance on sound waves as a carrier naturally limits the Doggie Internet to a rather local service region. WAKE UP. Dogs invented satellite communications. They're not howling at the moon at midnight, that's just a high speed upload. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 8 15 Oct 2001 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= ___ Live long ___....-----'---`-----....___ And ========================================= Prosper, Fidonet. ___`---..._______...---'___ (___) _|_|_|_ (___) \\____.-'_.---._`-.____// ~~~~`.__`---'__.'~~~~ ~~~~~ ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 9 15 Oct 2001 ================================================================= RECIPES ================================================================= From: Warren Bonner > Dad's Meatloaf < ABC's Emeril Lagasse Master Cheif's "Dad's Meatloaf" 2 teaspoons unsalted butter 1 pound ground beef 1/2 pound ground pork 1 cup finely chopped yellow onions 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell peppers 1 tablespoon minced garlic 2 large garlic 2 large eggs 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/2 to 1 cup fine dried bread crumbs 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons Emeril's Original Essence (recipe below) 1/2 pound smoked chorizo sausage, chopped into 1/2 inch pieces 1 cup bottled chili sauce 2 cups Emeril's Veal Stock (recipe below) or 2 cups of canned low-sodium beef broth 2 tablespoons bleached all-purpose flour 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a large roasting pan with the butter. 2. Mold the remaining mixture around and over the sausage to cover it completely. Pour the chili sauce on top. 3. Bake basting occassionally with the pan juices, for 1 1/2 hours. With large spatula, carefully transfer meat loaf to serving platter. 4. Heat the roasting pan over high heat on the stovetop. Add the stock, stir the browned bits in the pan, and bring to a boil. Whisk the flour and 2 tablespoons of water in a small bowl until smooth. Then whisk into the stock. Bring to a boil and cook, whisking often, until the gravy thickens slightly, about 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and spread the onions, carrots, celery, and garlic over the bones. Smear the tomato paste over the vegetables and return the pan to the oven. Roast for another 45 minutes and remove the pan. Pour off the fat from the pan. 4.Place the pan over medium heat on the stove and pour the wine over the vegetables and bones. Using a wooden spoon, deglaze, scraping the bottom of the pan for browned bits. Put everything into a large stockpot. Add the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil over a light heat, skimming off the foam that forms on the top. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer, uncovered, for 8 hours, skimming occasionally. 5.Ladle the stock through a fine mesh strainer and into a large bowl, takings care not to stir the stock. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out. There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory. I forget the other two. You're getting old when you don't care where your spouse goes, just as long as you don't have to go along. Middle age is when work is a lot less fun--and fun is a lot more work. Statistics show that at the age of seventy, there are five women to every man. Isn't that a bad time for a guy to get those odds? You know you're getting on in years when the girls at the office start confiding in you. Middle age is when it takes longer to rest than to get tired. By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere. Middle age is when you have stopped growing at both ends, and have begun to grow in the middle. A man has reached middle age when he is cautioned to slow down by his doctor instead of by the police. You know you're into middle age when you realize that caution is the only thing you care to exercise. The aging process could be slowed down if it had to work its way through Congress. You're getting old when you're sitting in a rocker and you can't get it started. You're getting old when you wake up with that morning-after feeling, and you didn't do anything the night before. The cardiologist's diet: if it tastes good, spit it out. Doctor to patient: I have good news and bad news: the good news is that you are not a hypochondriac. FIDONEWS 18-42 Page 13 15 Oct 2001 It's hard to be nostalgic when you can't remember anything. You know you're getting old when you stop buying green bananas. Last Will and Testament: Being of sound mind, I spent all my money. When you lean over to pick something up off the floor, you ask yourself if there is anything else you need to do while you are down there. You find yourself in the middle of the stairway, and you can't remember if you were downstairs going up or upstairs going down. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Good signs found in my e-mail.... Just be aware that I have no way to really make corrections to all of the Internet sites that I search to find this information. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- About the fidonews information the editor are wrong. This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line should be with an * before it. The second time and second line should without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language might not be accepted. (the only real rule in this whole thing) Remember, we really don't know who might be reading the Fidonews. Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to: Frank Vest Fidonet; 1:124/6308 E-Mail; flv@texoma.net Please leave me a message telling me that you have sent an article.
