Gold: $273, most everything else sliding downhill. The value of gold is holding its own, while Fidonet steadily deflates it's own valued nodelist. After 10 fat years, all of a sudden, the Fidonet Nodelist `Nile' has begun to run dry. Our Z's are on the spot. For unlike Joseph, the Jew who interpreted Pharaoh's dream. and became Egypt's second-in-command, they have not accomplished their duty to upgrade the antiquated Policy known as "P4.07" which is the mortar that holds the bricks of Fidonet together. The bricks just keep decomposing and disappearing; thus the Nodelist dries up. And so, the drought has begun...and the "granaries" are near empty, and still no rain, crops, or other relief is in sight.. But there is a promising storm cloud rolling over us as we read this opinion. Dear reader, I have never been on a first name basis with a deity. I do try to figure out how his 'invisible hand' works, but it seems presumptuous to give it a shake. Perhaps a good BRAIN-STORM............................................ by each of you would cause the down pour of ideas which would make our Fido Garden grow... by gentle persuasion modest expectations can be achieved if the C's unite together to get a new or at least a revised Policy that utilizes the power of this INTERNET STORM. I offer E-mail feeds for LOW volume data. At present this includes all of the Fidonet Administrative File Echoes (except the Echolist) and the BFDS FDN which I coordinate (very low volume & small sized files). Due to past problems encountered, I do not feed Echomail or Large Files via E-mail. :) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-26 Page 4 25 Jun 2001 ================================================================= EDITOR'S CORNER ================================================================= Last Week's Fidonews By Frank Vest Fidonet: 1:124/6308(.1) flv@texoma.net Unofficial Routed Netmail link for Net124 Web-Idiot for Region 19's Web site http://bise.tzo.com/r19 http://home.texoma.net/~flv Fidonews Editor at Fidonet: 1:1/23 Editor@fidonews.org In last week's Fidonews I took, what I thought were, some light hearted and humorous shots at Fidonet, some of the things and groups in Fidonet and the way things happen in Fidonet in general. I had hoped that there would be some talk and response to some of the questions raised by the edition. At least some introductions made. I hoped that the articles would be taken in a lighthearted and humorously serious vein. I guess I was mistaken. The Fidonews Echo all but dried up and the only response I got was a Netmail that arrived no more than three hours after I hatched the Fidonews. The Netmail was more concerned with the perceived rules that were perceived to have been violated than the content of the articles. Within the Netmail, the main question seemed to be if the rules for submissions to the Fidonews had changed. This in regards to there not being a author or an address for the author in the articles. Now, I'm not the brightest bulb in the package, but I would assume that an editorial (not under Guest Editorial) would be from the Editor. I would feel very sure that the "Editor's Corner" was from the Editor. As for the "Humor in a Fido Vein" area, that comes from many sources and not all of the articles have specific authors. Many are from things I find in other media and some are sent to me anonymously. As for the rules?? What rules? Read the "How to Submit an Article". +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ How to Submit an Article If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here are the guidelines: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do you see anything that says RULES??? It might be nice to set down some "hard" rules and enforce them to the letter, but that isn't very realistic. The only real thing that I balk FIDONEWS 18-26 Page 5 25 Jun 2001 at is vulgar language... and I've let that slip once or twice, I think. As you will notice, there is no doubt as to where this submission came from. :-) But just to be sure.... They all sat there on that cold January day, collectively contemplating their navels. They had lost! They had ranted and raved and hopped up and down about what they wanted, and they had lost! They had complained about the process and had tried to make everyone in Fidonet see things their way, and convince them that everyone who did not do things their way were part of a great conspiracy, and they had still lost! The day seemed dark indeed. A gloom had settled over the Northern half of the Great Lakes. What could be done? How could R12 have it's satisfaction? How could they get their way? Then a voice cut through the gloom. It was the old Salty elf, who had once been their leader; the self-annointed angel and hero of the anarchist cause. He started quietly, but his voice then gradually rose to a hystical crescendo, causing many a R12 elf to swoon on that day. "The new Z1C is EVIL!" he said. "She is EVIL and MUST be DESTROYED!" "What about those who elected her?" A timid R12 elf asked. Salty glared at this elf with fire in his eyes, and the elf seemed to physically shrink. "The others who elected her are ALSO EVIL!" he shouted. "If they help the Z1C, they must be DESTROYED as well!" "How can we accomplish this Salty?" one of the elves asked. "Our holy REC is gone, and we have to use echomail systems controlled from the outside." "Not to worry" said Salty, with a wicked gleam in his eye. "There is one who moves mail from the hated enemy camp, R18, who is vulnerable. He has lost his mentor, and now he hates those he once cooperated with, because he blames them for his mentor leaving. We will recruit him. We can control him. We will brainwash him so that he will be unswervingly loyal to the R12 cause." And so it came to be. The elf they recruited became a good echomail General for R12, and he immediately consolidated his camp, and took FIDONEWS 18-26 Page 7 25 Jun 2001 the Z1B by force. The R12 elves were *very* happy. They immediately dropped all connection with the outside world in favor of their new General's echomail army. But this was not enough. Salty was still feeling unsatisfied. He called a meeting with his General. "You must ATTACK the Z1C!" he told the General. "You must ATTACK her and ALL of those who serve her! You must ATTACK them on the ERN front, and on the Nodelist front, and you MUST look for EVERY tiny mistake to ATTACK them further with!" He shouted. The new General, in awe of the R12 angel, knelt down and kissed his feet. "I will do as you wish, my liege"; He said. And so the new R12 echomail General began his new campaign. But something went wrong. It was not so easy as the taking of the Z1B had been. He met with much resistance. Ordinary elves that had not spoken up before against him suddenly began to speak up; and what they were saying about him was not nice. Even some of those who had once rallied to his side now fought against him. But the General was undeterred. Armed with his hero, Salty, and the memory of his mentor to push him on, he continued to attack, attack, attack. Yet still he began to lose ground. He started to get beaten back. With the conviction borne of his R12 brainwashing, he began to employ that time-honored R12 tactic, denial. Yet there came a time when he could no longer deny the facts. He was under attack. Others were laughing at him. He had made mistakes in his attack on the Z1C, and it was turned around on him. He had made mistakes in his ERN attack and it was turned around on him. He had no choice but to retreat. Salty continued on with the attacks, emboldened by the assurance that he is always right, and the self-confidence of his delusional belief in his own greatness, but once again, a gloom had settled over the Northern part of the Great Lakes. Whatsoever will R12 do? Will they never have their way? Let's all hope so. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-26 Page 8 25 Jun 2001 ================================================================= COMIX IN ASCII ================================================================= Cownt me in on Fidonet (__) ___________________________ (oo) ______| | /-------\/ /______ Cownt me in on Fidonet | / | || | and the Fidonews | * ||----|| |___________________________| ^^ ^^ ___________________________________ __ | Crash Netmail Attach Articles To: | / \ | Editor@1:1/23 (1-972-562-8064) | /|oo \ ________| flv@texoma.net | (_| /_) /________ or | _`@/_ \ _ | Frank Vest@1:124/6308 | | | \ \\ |___________________________________| | (*) | \ )) |__U__| / \// _//|| _\ / (_/(_|(____/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-26 Page 9 25 Jun 2001 ================================================================= CLEAN HUMOR & JOKES ================================================================= The Pilot Children's Church Humor wdbonner@pacbell.net Terri asked her Sunday School class to draw pictures of their favorite bible stories. This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. 1. Put the title in two times. The first time should be with an * before it and the second time, on a seperate line, without the *. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language will not be accepted. (the only real rule in this whole thing) Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File --------------------------------|--------------------------------- Software Reviews (Fido) *.rev | Getting Technical *.ftc Web Page Reviews *.web | General Articles *.art Fidonet Current Events *.cur | Clean Jokes & Humor *.jok Ascii Comix *.cmx | From the *Cs *.css Rebuttals *.reb | Guest Editorial *.gue Advertise *.ads | Recipes *.rec Details: Software Reviews (Fido): Reviews of software for Fidonet and BBS. Getting Technical: Tech articles about Fidonet. How-to and such. Web Page Reviews: Reviews of Fidonet (maybe other) Related Web Pages. FIDONEWS 18-26 Page 21 25 Jun 2001 General Articles: These don't seem to fit in other places. Fidonet Current Events: Elections relating to Fidonet, new Nodes coming in and other such articles. Clean Jokes & Humor: Funny stories and jokes that are not vulgar. Ascii Comix: Those wonderful Ascii Comics that we used to have in the Fidonews. From the *Cs: Letters from the *Cs about what is going on in Fidonet. Rebuttals: Didn't like an article, want to say something in reply to an article? Say it here Guest Editorial: Don't let the Editor get all the glory. Write your own editorial and submit it. Advertise: Advertise your free Fidonet service, Fidonet event or whatever to do with Fidonet that you offer. If you are a Fidonet Service provider such as a "Fido<>Internet", Star Hub or some other such service provider, we can arrange to run your ad on a rotating basis. Ask the Editor. Recipes: Recipes from Sysops, readers or interested parties. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Frank L.
