"E-Listing the Fidonews Echo" from Frank Vest explains some things on this somewhat controversial issue. Day four of our travel report from the "2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U" follows. All this in the general articles section. In the software review section, we can read another article from Frank, "A Synchronet, Mystic Review". Warren Bonner, in his column, writes about the sad events that we've had the last couple of weeks in "Weathered Barn". Petko Bossakov is getting fido technical "Implementing a common standard for a higher BBS interface layer". Finally Carol cooks "Bo-Peeps-A-Crock". Sometimes, they just aren't as understandable as the Fidonet Technical Standards Committee intended. Lets start with the basics. The nodelist has a specific format. You can't vary off that in some aspects or it will fail to process. That can cause a node, hub segment, net segment, region, or even a whole Zone to fail to process depending on where it fails. YIKES!! Lets not go there ok? The first field of interest for a sysop with IP connectivity, is the 3rd one where the BBSname is traditionally entered. For an IP node, this is the 'system address' space. You list it but once here in the preferred mode if at all possible. You can also list the IP address or an email address if that's preferred. The problem for most NC's is that it's never really 'clear' how the samples and flags work in conjunction. Thats probably because there are many variations. Below is a sample for BINKP/TELNET/FTP type entries. Sample: ,100,ftp.cshenk.com,Virgina_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, (etc). In that case, ftp.cshenk.com is a 'DNS lookup' address for the IP number. If the site has a POTS line as well, list it as normal. If they do not, use -Unpublished- for the phone field, mark them PVT, and enter 300 for the baud rate. Among the flags, enter those which are applicable, omitting those that do not apply. FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 4 21 Oct 2002 Sample: (ION) ,300,CM,IBN,ITN,IFT (With POTS and IP) ,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,VFC,IBN,ITN,IFT While I dont see anyone using it, I could also just plug in the IP address there if it was STATIC. Sample: ,100,24.0.0.1,Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, (etc) Although controversial at this time, a static IP address can also be put in the phone number field by replacing the "." with a "-" and prefacing it with 000. Sample: ,100,Shenk's_Express,Virginia_Beach_VA, Carol_Shenkenberger,000-127-0-0-1,300, The other flags would be the same. Note, do NOT use this if the IP address isnt static! Even the 'gee seldom changes' folks should use the DNS version. If I used just email attachments, I'd enter my email address instead. Sample: ,100,cshenk2@home.com,Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, (etc). Then add the email version IP flags which fit my setup. Sample: (ION) ,300,CM,ITX,IUC,IMI (With POTS and IP) ,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,VFC,ITX,IUC,IMI Now lets say you do both methods. FTP or variation, and email attachment type and want to list both. It can be done. Be careful on field length as each flag must be 32 characters max including the flag! The total line must be 157 characters or less. Sample: ,100,ftp.cshenk.com,Virginia_Beach_VA,Carol_Shenkenberger, 1-757-486-3064,28800,CM,XA,V32B,V42B,IFT,ITX:cshenk2@home.com Note that on the IFT portion I did not need to relist the FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 5 21 Oct 2002 address. If 'ftp.cshenk.com' resolved to an IP address also capable of BINKP, I would add IBN. If it also connected to TELNET, I'd add ITN. Only ITX (email attachment TransX) required additional information be listed. I hope this helps pull things together for people! xxcarol ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 6 21 Oct 2002 E-Listing the Fidonews Echo By Frank Vest 1:124/6308.1 Much has been discussed, and otherwise argued, in the Fidonews Echo recently about the "Echolist". Some definitions to help with understanding before I get started. Echo Tag: The name of the echo. IE: FIDONEWS Echo Tag Holder or Tag Holder: The person that has the password to the listing Moderator: The person who moderates the echo. May or may not be the Tag Holder. E-list or Echolist: The International Echolist run by Thom LaCosta or other such list. Listing: The individual Echo Tag(s) and the information contained in them. Echolist Keeper: The person who maintains the E-List. Echo: The message area as is carried on a FTN. In discussion with Thom LaCosta, it might seem that we are at total odds with each other... maybe even enemies. In reality, we disagree on one major issue. That issue is the editing of listings in the E-list. In my humble view, there is no reason for an Echolist Keeper to edit the content of any individual listing in the E-List. That is not the responsibility of an Echolist Keeper. With that in mind, here's what I feel should be the responsibility of an Echolist Keeper: 1. To accept or deny new listings, updates, deletions to the E-List based on technical or legal requirements. IE: Correct password, valid e-mail or Netmail address, required fields filled in and so forth. 2. Remove listings that have expired or have been found to not meet the technical/legal requirements for listing. No other action should be taken by an Echolist Keeper. Some thoughts: 1. The Echo List is owned by the Echolist Keeper. The Echolist Keeper has the right to refuse any Listing (Echo Tag) be listed in his/her Echolist. NOTE: That does not imply the right of an Echolist Keeper to FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 7 21 Oct 2002 edit a Listing. 2. Each Listing in the Echolist is owned by the person(s) that hold the password to that Listing. The Listing is not a democracy. The Echo may be a democracy, but the Listing is not. A. If the Echo has rules that state, imply or whatever regarding the Echo, those rules apply only to the Echo, /NOT/ to the Listing. 3. The Moderator should, but is not required to, maintain the Listing (Echo Tag) in the E-List. If the Moderator chooses to delegate the maintenance of the Listing (Echo Tag) to some other party/person, the Moderator should realize the consequences of that action. A. Unless, or even if, the Moderator knows the password for the Listing (Echo Tag), S/he has given the right to change the Listing, including password, to the other party. IOW, Know darn well just who you trust. :) 4. The Echolist is a collection of Echo Tags (Listings) that are "For Sale" to be distributed. Who knows better how they desire the echo to be "sold" or distributed than the Moderator(s) of the Echo? A. In a case where the Listing (Echo Tag) is maintained by another party, refer to thought #3 :) Now, I'll admit that since the Echolist Keeper owns the E-List, he has the right to do as he pleases with the listings... However, it is my humble opinion that if the above thoughts were put in place as the basis for a kind of "policy" for the Echolist, the Echolist and Echolist Keeper would gain more respect, acceptance, integrity and usage. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 8 21 Oct 2002 2002 Off Centre Rally - The Big U Submitted by David Drummond, 3:640/305 Day 4 - Wednesday 7th August (Fairburn Dam to Winton) Rick discovered on waking that his Thermorest-clone air mattress had started to perish, after 10 years. That meant a return trip to the camping shop in Emerald. Rick wasn't in the most favourable mood, anyway, after a young fellow took the trouble to let us know that Rick's snoring could be heard from the other end of the camp ground, just in case we didn't know. I actually hadn't heard him, so I must have slept pretty well myself. Actually I woke without the terrible headache, thank goodness. I'm wondering if it was caused by not wearing my silk balaclava, and the subsequent cold draft going down the back of my neck. Note: Remember to always wear silk balaclava. It turned out the camping shop didn't have any Thermorests, or Nalgene containers ("What are they?"), so Rick bought some glue to attempt repairs, and we bought a large water bottle with a wide cap which should do us in the meantime. At last we were on our way again, past the gem fields to Alpha and a rest stop at Drummond Range lookout. Just before Barcaldine, there were some road works that we had to slow down for. My temperature light came on, which was pretty alarming! We discussed it, and decided to continue on and see if it went out when we got some speed up. It did. Though it came on again, when we reached the petrol station in Barcaldine. We let the bike cool down a bit, took off all the front fairing (16 screws) to get to the coolant tank and radiator. Even though there was coolant up to the minimum level in the overflow tank, there was no water at all in the radiator. We bought a 1.5 litre bottle of water, let it warm up to air temperature while we had lunch, then put about 600 ml into it. That topped it up. We hope that'll fix it. Said farewell to Rick who was heading up to Muttaburra and we went to Longreach, then on to Winton which we reached right on 5 o'clock. The Winton Pub does $10 dinners at the caravan park, so we booked in for that. Checked the water level in the radiator - had to put more in. Damn. That means there must be a leak. Chatted to a couple of NDC (formerly Telstra) guys in an emu- damaged 4WD, then went to the fire-pit for dinner. Roast beef and gravy with chunks of roast potato, peas, corn and damper. After our big day, it went down well. We couldn't stay awake for the Bush Poetry session, but judging by the laughter and clapping, we must have been good. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 9 21 Oct 2002 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE REVIEWS ================================================================= A Synchronet, Mystic Review By Frank Vest 1:124/6308.1 No, this isn't some sort of spiritual review of synchronization. :-) It is a critical look at two BBS software packages that, in my view and opinion, could be really great /IF/ the authors would get together on some ideas. I have used both BBS packages. While I find that both are very good, there are problems with both. I currently run Synchronet as the "lesser of two evils". On the plus side, both softwares are still under development by the authors. Synchronet BBS: 1. The current version is telnet only. For those of us that still run, or want to run, a dial-up line, an older version of Synchronet has to be used in conjunction with the latest version. To the credit of the author, the two versions will work together. When running the dial-up version of Synchronet, the Synchronet doors that require access to the Internet, such as the "telnet out to other BBSs" will not work. 2. Synchronet only supports one message base format. This limits the number of mail tossers that can be used to two that I know of. One is the Synchronet tosser (SBBSECHO) and the other is "Amail". Amail has some problems of its own and that makes SBBSECHO the only really viable tosser for Synchronet. I understand that Amail is being looked at by a software author and might be under development again soon. This would be great, but until then... Mystic BBS: 1. The telnet version of Mystic for Windows will not run 16 bit Dos doors under Win95/98. This makes all of the old door games, that many users enjoy, unavailable to them unless the Sysop upgrades to WinXP or better. 2. I could not get the Windows version of Mystic to accept a dial-up connection with a front end program such as Frontdoor. Maybe that was just me? I had to use the Dos version with a "modem emulator" like "Netmodem" to offer telnet access. Conclusion: Both of these BBS packages have some powerful features. For my $.02, FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 10 21 Oct 2002 Mystic is easier to set up and the menus are easier to edit while Synchronet can handle the 16 bit Dos doors. While I've not covered all of the differences, problems, features and such in each package, I believe that if one, or both of these software packages could get together and offer what is lacking in the other, Sysops would have a really powerful software. Both have the advantage of active authors, and that is a plus in todays BBS world. I hope that this "review" is taken as constructive by both authors. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 11 21 Oct 2002 ================================================================= OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER ================================================================= Weathered Barn wdbonner@pacbell.net The last two issues of Fidonet have dropped our spirits and left us feeling mighty low with the departure of well known persons a Clay Tanicore and H†kan Andersson. My good friend Jim White sent the following to me today. It some how tells us a story that relates to our departed friends. The Weathered Old Barn A stranger came by the other day with an offer that set me to thinking. He wanted to buy the old barn that sits out by the highway. I told him right off he was crazy. He was a city type, you could tell by his clothes, his car, his hands, and the way he talked. He said he was driving by and saw that beautiful barn sitting out in the tall grass and wanted to know if it was for sale. I told him he had a funny idea of beauty. Sure, it was a handsome building in its day. But then, there's been a lot of winters pass with their snow and ice and howling wind. The summer sun's beat down on that old barn till all the paint's gone, and the wood has turned silver gray. Now the old building leans a good deal, looking kind of tired. Yet, that fellow called it beautiful. That set me to thinking. I walked out to the field and just stood there, gazing at that old barn. The stranger said he planned to use the lumber to line the walls of his den in a new country home he's building down the road. He said you couldn't get paint that beautiful. Only years of standing in the weather, bearing the storms and scorching sun, only that can produce beautiful barn wood. It come to me then. We're a lot like that, you and I. Only it's on the inside that the beauty grows with us. Sure we turn silver gray too...and lean a bit more than we did when we were young and full of sap. But the Good Lord knows what He's doing. And as the years pass He's busy using the hard weather of our lives, the dry spells and the stormy seasons, to do a job of beautifying in our souls that nothing else can produce. [ Clay and H†kan were young, called when only half their days were done.] And to think how often folks holler because they want life easy! They took the old barn down today and hauled it away to beautify a rich man's house. And I reckon someday you and I'll be hauled off to Heaven to take on whatever chores the Good Lord has for us on the Great Sky Ranch. And I suspect we'll be more beautiful then for the seasons we've been through here...and maybe even add a bit of beauty FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 12 21 Oct 2002 to our Father's house. The storms of our life prove the strength of our anchor. I feel sure that Clay and H†kan are a beautiful colour in our Father's house. I'm sure Fidonet has had many folks that await them in heaven. Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 13 21 Oct 2002 ================================================================= GETTING FIDONET TECHNICAL ================================================================= Implementing a common standard for a higher BBS interface layer Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1 I have to start with this: Fidonet is in a decline. Nobody doubts that, and it has been repeated many times. I would like to reflect on a very basic reason for this. I believe that Fidonet still has a good infrastructure, because in many regions of the world there is a locally accessible node. That's why IMO although we need new nodes, there is something that we need more: users. Someone to take advantage of that infrastructure and make it run at a higher capacity. The users' primary entry point for Fidonet are the local BBSes, whether dial-up or telnet. But there are fewer and fewer people calling them. What is the reason? I think there are two sides of the coin. One is the publicity issue, which I've written about in the past, and will write about in the future. The other reason, which is the topic of this article, is technical. Let's face it, folks, we live in the 21st century. We need a GUI. And I mean a front interface for dialing BBSes which would make the raw terminal connection totally hidden to the user. Early attempts with the RIP scripting failed because of the proprietary nature of the standards. That's why I'm proposing that an universal GUI implementation is made and here are my ideas (somewhat sketchy at the moment). Consider the hypothetical Universal BBS GUI client named UniCall. That software would provide a local GUI interface for the basic BBS functions, i.e. 1. registration and login 2. mail 3. files We'll discuss the registration and login first. Actually, this one is already implemented with the IEMSI protocol. Many BBS servers and terminals support that - and the caller would have to fill in the data locally, in UniCall's Options dialog box, which would provide for an automatic login. The mail exchange can also be easily implemented in UniCall, by simply using QWK packets. Users would edit and read messages offline, then UniCall does the exchange and that's finished. The third item, however, would require more work. File uploads and downloads are handled differently in every BBS, so that's what I am proposing: After dialing, UniCall would enter a special door. UniCall would FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 14 21 Oct 2002 communicate with this door through a standard protocol in order to: a) get a list of areas and files b) select files c) download files (Zmodem can be used for this) This way, the caller could tag and download files in the same way on any BBS. The power that UniCall (or however we may choose to name it) would provide will be unlimited. It can provide a complete graphical interface for the caller. It could even provide a web interface by emulating a proxy server, which would allow BBSes to be acessible with just a web browser, while maintaining compatibility with old terminal software. I am optimistic that such a software could greatly increase Fido's user base and maybe even do what Mosaic did to the Internet. Therefore I am asking anyone interested to help develop the aforementioned file selection protocol, and install it in their BBSes to help it become an open and universal standard. Then we could join our efforts in creating the freely available UniCall software, and then... the sky's the limit! ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-42 Page 15 21 Oct 2002 ================================================================= FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN ================================================================= Bo-Peeps-A-Crock Yield: 8 Servings 1 lb 2-3 lb veal/lamb breast 2 tb Chicken bullion mix (or 1 qt Water to 1 qt (or broth) 1 ts Nutmeg 1 ts Ginger, powdered 16 ea Cloves, whole 1 ea Medium/large carrot, chopped 1 c Grapes (optional) Good sale? If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor Best of Fidonet *.bof | If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
