Last week it was Frank Vest, this week it's Warren Bonner. In his column he writes about "A WISE TEACHER". A rather sentimental story from the time of the Vietnam war. Then two of his jokes made it. "The Blonde and the Trucker" is something for us, that's used to snow, ice and wintery roads. Maybe a reminder, that the summer, we now enjoy on the northern hemisphere, will not last for ever. After that a short piece about common sense, and how far that can take you, called "THE SWING". In another one for the jokes section, Petko Bossakov has found a bunch of "Funny newspaper headlines". Finally, in our kitchen this week, Carol makes "Carol's Baked Squash". The squash in my garden is growing really great (as usual with this easy to grow plant), so I think I'll give it a try in a couple of weeks, when they are ready to harvest. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-31 Page 3 5 Aug 2002 ================================================================= OL'WDB'S COLUMN - WARREN BONNER ================================================================= A WISE TEACHER wdbonner@pacbell.net One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name. Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down under the persons name. It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment and, as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers. That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday, she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much" were some of the comments. No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on. Several years later, one of the students was killed in Vietnam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome, so mature. The church was packed with his friends. One by one, those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin. As she stood there, one of the soldiers, who acted as pallbearer, came up to her. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded: "Yes." Then he said: "Mark talked about you a lot." After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher. FIDONEWS 19-31 Page 4 5 Aug 2002 "We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket. "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it." Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notepaper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew, without looking, that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him. "Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it." All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home." Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album." "I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary." Then Vickie, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times," Vickie said, and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our lists." That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again. The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day, and we don't know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late... GOD BLESS, Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-31 Page 5 5 Aug 2002 ================================================================= FIDONET'S INTERNATIONAL KITCHEN ================================================================= Carol's Baked Squash Yield: 4 Servings 4 ea Summer yellow squash 1/4 c Lowfat cottage cheese 1/4 c Tofu, soft 1 lg Onion, chopped rough 1 ea Carrot, chopped small 1 ea Green pepper, chopped pretty 1 ts Anise Salt and pepper to taste Ok, this isnt haute cuisine, but it's tasty and not high in calories. Due to the other indredients being 'fat-free' the 1/4 cup cottage cheese makes it high fat percentage, but actually a decent meal deal on fats because that 1/4 cup is split 4 ways. Bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour. An alternative to Anise as a spice is: Cumin, celery seeds, or chinese 5 spice. You can omit all the spices if desired and serve with a little bottle of tobasco sauce at the side. Goes well with: Baked chicken, pork chops, or a simple cold boiled shrimp dish. One cold, January day, a trucker stops for red light when a blonde girl catches up. She knocks on his door and the trucker rolls down the window. The girl says "Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load." The trucker ignores her and proceeds down the street. The trucker stops for another red light and the girl again catches up. She knocks on the door and the trucker lowers the window only to hear, "Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load!" He ignores her again and continues down the street. The trucker stops for still another red light and the girl catches up again, all out of breath. She knocks on the door and the trucker lowers the window. Again she says "Hi, my name is Heather and you are losing some of your load!" He dismisses her and starts off down the street, then decides he can't stand it anymore and stops. He gets out of the truck, approaches the blonde girl and says: "Hi, my name is Kevin and I am driving a SALT TRUCK!" ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-31 Page 7 5 Aug 2002 Funny newspaper headlines Petko Bossakov, 2:535/1 4-H Girls Win Prizes for Fat Calves After Detour to California Shuttle Returns to Earth Air Head Fired Alcohol Frequently Seen In Cases (from the Colorado Daily News) Arson Suspect is Held in Massachusetts Fire Astronaut Takes Blame for Gas in Spacecraft Ban On Soliciting Dead in Trotwood Bank Drive-in Window Blocked by Board British Left Waffles on Falkland Islands British Union Finds Dwarfs in Short Supply Chef Throws His Heart into Helping Feed Needy (from the Louisville Courier Journal) Child's Death Ruins Couple's Holiday Deaf College Opens Doors to Hearing Deer Kill 17,328 Drunk Gets Nine Months in Violin Case Drunken Drivers Paid $1000 in `84 Enfields Couple Slain; Police Suspect Homicide Enraged Cow Injures Farmer with Ax Eye Drops off Shelf Farmer Bill Dies in House Heat Wave Linked to Temperatures (from Daily Sun Post) Hospitals are Sued by 7 Foot Doctors (from the Providence Journal) If Strike isn't Settled Quickly, It May Last a While Include your Children When Baking Cookies Infertility Unlikely To Be Passed On (from the Montgomery Advertiser) Iraqi Head Seeks Arms Is There a Ring of Debris around Uranus? After several hours of reading the directions, attempting to fit bolt A into slot B, etc., he finally gave up and called upon an old handyman working in a neighboring yard. The old-timer came over, threw the directions away, and in a short while had the set completely assembled. It's beyond me," said the father, "how you got it together without even reading instructions." "To tell the truth," replied the old-timer, "I can't read, and when you can't read, you've got to think." If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 12:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
