Ron Dwight has moved on to the other realm. Those of you that want to put a face to his name, may want to pay a visit to http://www.rarsoft.com. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 19-13 Page 2 1 Apr 2002 ================================================================= TOP STORIES ================================================================= A Passing of Significance. By Ward Dossche "The evil that men do lives after them The good is oft interred with their bones, so let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus hath told you that Caesar was ambitious If it were so, It was a grievous fault And grievously hath Caesar answered it. Here under leave of Brutus and the rest (For Brutus is an honourable man So are they all, all honourable men) Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral." From "Julius Caesar" By W. Shakespeare (Act-III, scene-2) --------------------------------------------- This is a very strange article for me to write, but one that I feel needs to be written. Via different channels the news is reaching us, and it is confirmed, that our fellow ex-sysop and former zone-coordinator for zone-2 Ron Dwight has passed away. If anything is to be said about Ron, then it is that he was a man of principle, often not liked because of this principle, and that he was one of those leaving a very visual mark on Fidonet. At least in zone-2 that is. Ron was human and therefor by definition not free from error. He will be remembered for many things. Years from now, if we're still around, the story of the "region24-putsch" will still be told. There will be references to dictatorial rule, in old archives will be the traces of the verbal battles that have been fought with him. The possibility exists that he will be remembered for the wrong things. My own interactions with Ron often were "unfriendly" and I will not dig into that. That is the past, and the past is behind us. I will not remember him as an unfriendly person though. With the hindsight offered by his recent passing-away I am glad that in early 1999 Ron and I made our peace, he was still a Fidonetnode but not really that participating anymore as he used to. Maybe for him a phase in his life was finished and he wanted to do something else. So I went to Helsinki in Finland and Ron drove down from Kirkkunumi at the day when the coldest temperatures of the century in Finland were FIDONEWS 19-13 Page 3 1 Apr 2002 recorded. I remember -39øC (and even -52øC in Kitela where I was supposed to go). He opened his house for me, extended an invitation to stay there. I met his wife, never knew he was married, and he offered a very nice dinner. There and then I met a completely different Ron Dwight, a man with a broad interest outside computing, a man knowing to appreciate a simple lifestyle, talking about uncomplicated things like family, friends in Fido, a person -one in a handful I'd say- understanding the pressure of being ZC in a large zone. We made plans for the future, do things together, but they were never meant to be. And now it is too late. Although we could fight and disagree terribly Ron was always ready to help. When I was elected ZC/2 in October 1994 he was there to provide kind assistance for quite a long time to a perfect greenhorn. I called him often on the phone for an opinion, he was the one who planted the seed for cleaning the nodelist up via software and in a way was the spiritual father of ERRFLAGS. In the Fido Hall-of-Fame Ron has a spot next to other giants which have departed from us ... I can think of Doug Myers and Louis Van Geel. Undoubtedly there are others. Selected individuals will disagree with me and believe me weak but I appreciated Ron quite a lot and the memory of him that stays with me will be a sweet-one. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK... b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 01:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Kitchen *.rec | Poet's Corner *.poe Clean Humor & Jokes *.jok | Other Stuff *.oth Fidonet Classified Ads *.ads | Corrections *.cor If you don't know or are not sure, send the article anyway. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
